If you are looking to pick up Modern cards, I would get a feel for a deck you like and save up for it long before that time frame

I used to do a lot of business with Troll and Toad years ago, as their prices on single cards were usually excellent, and TCGPlayer wasnt the default TCG marketplace juggernaut it is now
The drop rate for cards like Command Tower from the Mystery Booster 2 packs is exceptionally low
Combo decks value consistency, speed, and resilience: the deck should be reliable enough to produce the combo on a regular basis, the deck should be able to use the combo fast enough to win before the opponent, and the deck should be able to withstand disruption and still win . Link I think this is way too long, and it suffers from some of the same problems as some of the definitions above
