If, for some reason, the creature doesn't have the squad ability when it's on the battlefield, the ability won't trigger, even if you've paid the squad cost one or more times
You can pay one black mana and sacrifice another creature to have a player mill three cards, which is cool, but you can also pay one life to add one colorless mana which can only be used to cast spells from your graveyard
This effect can cause Identity Thief to become a copy of a creature that cant normally attack, such as Lupine Prototype or a creature with defender
