You won't get him to 8/8 very often but a handy target for early game removal which means that they are using removal on a creature that isn't too important to the aim of the deck

Im personally thinking of a Modern Infect storm build that made the rounds a while ago, playing off of tutoring up Venerated Rotpriests to the field as quickly as possible and then hitting them with as many Ground Rifts as possible
