Since there're (basically) very few rules about how to set up your play area, you could defend against it by spreading out all your cards as far apart as you wanted
I can't really imagine a scenario where someone would be using targeted removal on either Clues or Shards, but, at least in my meta, folks are more inclined to run VandalblastVandalblast than they are to run TranquilityTranquility, so Shards probably are better, but that's not really the point
Despite being a good tempo cards and fairly well priced the lack lustre 2/2 vanilla body rather lets the card down
